Good Evening,

On March 14th a national student walkout is planned to urge Congress to “pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship,” according to Women’s March Youth EMPOWER organizers.

The National School Walkout is scheduled at 10 a.m. and is supposed to last 17 minutes to honor the 17 students and staff members killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on Valentine’s Day.We are aware that students across the Atlanta Metro area intend on participating in this national walk-out.  School systems have had varying responses to how they will handle these acts of non-violent protest by students.  We have received a number of calls and communications from community and student organizers about ways support can be provided for these students.  We have identified the followings ways and strategies to be supportive:

1)      Know Your Rights when Protesting Session- Conducted by Civil Rights & Criminal Defense Attorneys to discuss with students and their parents’ legal rights and possible consequences – Tiffany Williams Roberts & Jeff Filipovits

2)      Peace Marshal Training- Conducted by trained Non-Violent advocates for community members who wish to volunteer to be present outside schools when students walkout on March 14th in case they decide to march or rally. – Tim Franzen & Paul Mclean

3)      Legal Observer Training- Conducted by Attorneys for law students, lawyers, and community members who want to serve as legal observers outside the schools when students walkout on March 14th to observe and report any violations of student’s rights. – Wingo Smith & Mawuli Davis

4)      Legal Support Training- Conducted by advocates who have previously provided legal support for protestors.  Volunteers will monitor phones and social media and help direct support as needed to students across the City. – Tatiana Lima & Megan Harrison

5)      Legal Rapid Response Team Training- Conducted by attorneys to assist volunteer attorneys who are willing to go to the scene of student harassment or possible arrests. (i.e. school locations, rally points, and jails) – Nora Benavidez, Miguel Dominguez, & Gerald Griggs

We will conduct these trainings as follows:

CITYWIDE TRAINING- Sunday, March 11, 2018, at 6:30 at Georgia State College of Law 85 Park Place Atlanta 30303 Co-Sponsored by Black Law Students Association GSU

CITY OF DECATUR SPECIFIC TRAINING Monday, March 12, 2018, at 6:30 at TBA Co-Sponsored by Hate Free Decatur & CC4D

Our collective objective is to provide support and to ensure the safety of our students.  Students will be able to call, text, and use social media to alert “The Coalition in Support of Student Walkout on March 14th”. Please confirm your organization’s 1) interest in participating 2) being listed as a coalition member 3) ability to solicit volunteers for the training sessions 4) availability for a press conference on Monday March 12, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Georgia State Capitol (it is our hope that a show of community organization will dissuade school officials and police from infringing on the rights of students or unfairly disciplining them).
